Name: Ninian O'Scolaidhe
Age: 20
Species: Human
Class: Sophmore - Student (First year at Esras)
Appearance:
Though Ninian is certainly not the ugliest of beings, he does nothing to make himself a great beauty either. His hair is brownish in color, framing his face in a flattering cut that his twin sister Maeve forced upon him. His wardrobe is likewise chosen by said sister, as he certainly shouldn’t pick it himself. Ninian is nearly blind, suffering from Juvenile Retinoschisis which leaves him almost completely blind. He only sees blurs of distorted colors and shapes.
Regardless of their functional capability, Nin’s eyes are beautiful, and in fact his best feature. They’re a deep and dark green, accented by long brown lashes. By comparison, the rest of his physical attributes are fairly commonplace.
His skin his clear, lucky for him, and the same pale color many of his Irish brethren share. Like his skin, Nin’s body is nothing remarkable. He’s average in build, avoiding putting on the pounds only because he goes running on treadmills at the gym. Said body is marred with forgotten childhood scars, and some new ones accompanied by bruises from walking into things.
Generally Ninian can be found with a pleasant smile on his face, revealing nice straight teeth. Unlike his sister though, his are not blindingly white from years of unneccesary bleaching. However, both twins do share the same pouty smile, and same dimples. They also have the same soft and barely noticable spray of freckles over their noses and cheekbones.
Maeve often dresses her brother, having found that when left to his own devices, the nice clothes she’d picked for him would be mismatched. Eventually, she took to organizes his wardrobe by parts that appropriately mix and match, forbidding him to cross from one section to another. Ninian looks like the poster boy for casual and relaxed styles, with clothing styles a mix of Abercrombie and Express. The only say he had was to refuse wearing anything with brand names plastered across the front.
For the most part, Ninian’s appearance is staple, and rarely changes. His body is always adorned with the same style clothes. On his feet are tightly laced , shin height boots, protecting his lower legs from damage. Though it’s not always necessary, he keeps a rather inobtrusive cane, hand crafted by his grandfather from strong oak wood, in hand.
Personality:
Ninian is a rather fiery spirit despite a passive nature people assume he often portrays. A particularly willful individual, Ninian has developed a capacity for oral debate that could rival any Crossfire participant. Not inclined to physical intimidation due to his handicap, Ninian has learned to assert himself vocally. He refuses to believe anything blindly, having done so for far too many years of his life. Discussion and educated diatribes fascinate him, and he is always eager to participate and learn.
Many twins look similar but are practically polar in personalities. Ninian and his twin sister Maeve are no different. Visual incapacitationled Ninian to having very different priorities and goals than his sister. Though Maeve is a professional model Ninian could care less about fashion and appearance, and thus allows his sister to dictate many an aesthetic matter to him. Who cares about colors and fabrics when your sense of sight is practically nil?
Nin has a passionate lover for “opening his eyes” to new things and new facets of the old. He is rare to truly anger because of this love, rather opting to promote mediation and understanding for both sides in conflicts be they his own or those of others. If one of the agressors can understand a new side of their opponent, then perhaps conflict can be resolved. Having a no tolerance policy for those who expect pity, he is not the one to go to if you just want to rally people to your cause for no reason. Patience is a virtue, and generally Nin has it. However, those who abuse it by presumptuous expections will be met with brutally honest criticism as Nin “sees” it. Always willing to be taught, he’ll readily retract such harsh words, but only when proven wrong. The boy is a firm believer in speaking his mind until appropriate criticism comes.
Unable to develop himself with talents too strong in sports and art, Ninian turned to other mediums of hobby and expression. As with any person of a diminished sense his others are very acute. Touch, sound, smell, and taste are experienced strongly by him, and as a result he developed his hobbies accordingly. From a young age, Nin found himself drawn to making music. He’d bang pots and pans with a tonal quality, make rubber-band banjos, and eventually got himself a guitar. Touch and hearing were all he’d need to have fun with it. At first it was acoustic, but then his fun branched to electric guitar because of sound manipulations. He loves the texture and quality sound can have, and such a medium better allows him to feel the experience. Nin has an amazing ear for sound, from picking out off key notes in choirs to catching snippets of conversation in crowded hallways.
Likes:
eating, tasting, running, showers and scented soaps, music, bright lights, a healthy debate, changing opions when warranted, people without problems of others being in close proximity (so that he can see them to some degree)
Dislikes: failed medical theories, dogmatic thought, bad odors, strong perfume, physical confrontation, people who whine about ‘how bad their lives are,’ mirrors
Magic Capabilities: None beyond the human body’s amazing naturally capacity for coping.
History:
Born to Shawn and Bedelia O'Scolaidhe, on June 11th, 1985, Ninian was a very special Gemini. His twin sister Maeve was born four moments later, making him a Gemini in the truest sense of the word. However, his birth was ill-fated though no one would know for years to come. He was born with the genetic disease of Juvenile Retinoschisis. Within four years of living, the boy and his family noticed a quick decline in his sight. He was wearing glasses, and within a month or two he had had to get the lenses changed out. And a month later, he again had to get new lenses. Within time the doctor’s had diagnosed him, but it was too late to save his failing vision.
There were basic surgeries to repair retinal detachment, but they were very underdeveloped at the time, and it was far too late by the time doctors were able to tell what he suffered from. Up until he turned twelve, they tried multiple aids, medications, and even a few surgeries on his retinas. However, they were to no avail. Finally, his parents put a stop to it. Their son had grown depressed and discouraged by the experimental treatments. If any more to be administered, his parents were not going to have him be the guinea pig. The next six years were spent in private schooling in Dublin, his home town, with a tutor. He’d been privately taught before that, but his parents felt that he needed social interaction instead of being holed away in hospitals learning as he recovered from surgeries.
Upon his eighteenth birthday, he and his sister were close to graduating. Maeve had been a model in high school, and earned herself many a scholarship to prestigious schools. She stayed nearby, unwilling to leave her brother, but also unwilling to miss out on going to school. Ninian wasn’t so lucky. Though his disability earned him many awards of money, on top of his impeccable grades, they were of no use. Bedelia refused to let her son out of her sight. In her mind, he wasn’t capable of fending for himself.
After a year of suffering his overprotective mother’s whims Ninian and Maeve had a lot of time to plot. Ninian had to get out of the house and experience the world, if he was going to be a healthily adjusted individual. They managed to convince Shawn that it would be good for him, that Maeve would transfer schools to help her brother, and that Esras University near Ennis was the perfect bet. It was small and enclosed, so Nin wouldn’t get lost on a multi-building campus. Shawn, though usually quiet, took this to bat with his wife, and the three of them eventually managed to sway Bedelia after a summer of well made arguments and pleading. Fortunately the pair made it into the school just before the drop/add period of classes ended.
